Well the race was an overall success for the first one of the season. The stampede is exactly what this race was at the beginning. The whole course had an elevation change of maybe 10 feet. Nothing but flat and twisty with rocks, stones, bricks, roots and foundations thrown in the mix. Race went as follows. Got a good start considering I was a single speed in an absolutely stacked field of national caliber athletes. Held my own and probably entered the single-track around mid-pack. First corner was a mess of people getting off and walking, probably around 20 of us. Pack thinned out and finally was on pace. Past my way up through the pack for the first two laps. Lap three hit and there was nobody around. I didn't see anybody for the rest of the race, other than the few that were fixing flats (lots or glass and sharp rocks on this course) and the four that went by me as I was fixing a thrown chain. Put in pretty consistent lap times round 21 minutes for the 4 mile lap. We ended up doing 7 laps around the course. Didn't have a clue where I was as far as the standing go when I finished, just glad to be done with the flatness and turns, got a little annoyed! I checked results and to my suprise top 10 finish. Kick butt! Considering the first 4 were Brian Eppen, Lalonde, Cam and Aaron, don't feel to bad about that result. Lots of single-speeders choose to drop to the single-speed class because of the stacked field. Probably should have done so but wanted the miles and glad I stuck to the Expert. Ended up finishing the 28 mile race in 2:24:45. Pretty good considering the flatness and dropping a chain. About 5 minutes out of top 5. Good race. Will consider doing this one again next year, given the talent it draws and the earliness of the race to test the legs before the Time Trials. Good Time. Overall laps below. That is all for now. OUT!!
